Amazing documentaries by Allison Argo, ‘Sea People of Polynesia,’ & more

The following classes are offered during week six of the Fall Lifetime Learning session. All are available online via Zoom as well as in person at the library’s Craine Room.

On Monday, Oct. 30, from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Lifetime Learning is proud to offer a course by filmmaker Allison Argo: “Lending a Voice to Those Who Are Silenced.” Allison has films which have been shown on PBS and National Geographic and have won multiple awards. In this course she will share three of her films, discuss the story behind each, and answer questions. The first film is “Crash: A Tale of Two Species.”

Yoga teacher Carrie Duperron in her one-class course “Keys to Wellness at Any Age: Learning to Relax” on Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Through Carrie’s explanations and cues, learn how to focus, soothe the mind and body, and drop into a relaxed state. (Note: this class has been rescheduled from Oct. 3.)

The second class of Mary Ann Eaton’s course “Wild About Wilde!” will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Mary Ann Eaton delves into Oscar Wilde’s short stories and his fascinating life using The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde. The course continues on Nov. 8 and concludes on Nov. 15.

The course “Novels & Ideas: ‘Labyrinths’” continues on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with a discussion of Joan Didion’s “Democracy.” The course concludes on Nov. 15 with “Tinkers” by Paul Harding.

On Thursday, Nov. 2, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, the one-class course, “Sea People: The Puzzle of Polynesia,” will feature Gordon Talley as he investigates how unique boats and navigation skills made it possible for Polynesians to spread their culture across the Pacific Ocean.

The course “Music of the Romantic Period” presented by Joseph Marchio, Assistant Conductor of the Cape Symphony, continues on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. An exploration of the Romantic period from 1830 to 1900, this course examines composers from the era including the Mendelssohns, the Schumanns, and Brahms. The course continues on Nov. 9 and 16.

Due to technical issues, the second class of the course “John Singer Sargent: A Charmed Life” originally presented by Beth Stein on Sept. 28 will run again on Friday, Nov. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Beth looks at Sargent’s life and work as she discusses his paintings, watercolors, and murals. If you missed the first class and would like to register, you will be sent the recording of that class and we will see you for the second class in the Craine Room at the library or on Zoom.

The suggested donation is $10 per course. If you wish to join on Zoom, register at least 24 hours before the class. If you are attending in person, you may register at the door.
