Explore mythology, literature, movies and science in Lifetime Learning's week nine
The 2021 Winter/Spring Session of Lifetime Learning at Snow Library continues with new courses exploring mythology, literature and science. Next week’s offerings also include ongoing studies in film and wellness.
On Tuesday, March 30 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Peggy Kelleher returns to present the first class in her popular three-part course “Murder and Mayhem in the Ancient World (And You Think Your Family Was Dysfunctional?).” Experience the family chaos and carnage caused by curses, oracles, and prophecies as depicted in the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and others. The first class explores the House of Atreus: the curse that started it all.
Later on Tuesday, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Kathie Gulotta leads the second of three classes exploring the “Juxtaposition of Science, Poetry and Breathing: Simple Strategies to Lighten Your Emotional Load.” Interesting insights will be revealed as Gulotta examines the ideas of various physicists and poets side-by-side. This will be combined with beneficial breathing techniques that will raise your energy.
On Tuesday evening, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Steve and Jeff Bornemeier continue their four-part course titled “Novels and Ideas: ‘Parables,’” this time discussing “The Moviegoer” by Walker Percy, published in 1961.
On Wednesday, March 31 from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Leigh and David Fisher conclude their “Reel Time” film series on “Great Movies from Great Directors” with a screening and discussion of Rob Marshall’s 2002 film version of the lively Broadway musical “Chicago,” starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, and Richard Gere. This course will not be recorded.
On Friday, April 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Stephen Munroe launches his five-part course “The Molecular Revolution in Biology and Medicine.” The first topic discussed will be the double helix of DNA and the protein-folding problem.
Unless otherwise indicated, most classes are recorded and can be viewed at your convenience.
