Lifetime Learning begins remotely on Oct. 5

The Friends of Snow Library 2020 Fall Lifetime Learning Session is scheduled to run from Monday, Oct. 5 through Friday, Nov. 20. Due to Covid-19 all the courses will be presented via Zoom. All courses will be recorded unless indicated otherwise. The LTL staff may be able to assist anyone not familiar with Zoom.

The following seven courses start during the first week of the LTL Fall Session that begins on Oct. 5:

Monday afternoon, Oct. 5 from 3 to 4 p.m., Jung-Ho Pak and Dr. Michael Albaugh present their one-class course discussing the evolving environment and exciting new future for the Cape Symphony on the stage and in the communities. Join us for this “behind the scenes” view and opportunity for open discussion. (Not recorded.)

Tuesday morning, Oct. 6 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Roger Kligler, M.D. presents a one-class course called The Death I Want: A Talk and Discussion on Medical Aid in Dying. Dr. Kligler has been diagnosed with incurable metastatic prostate cancer. As a practicing physician, he had extensive experience with end-of-life care.

Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Steve and Jeff Bornemeier begin their course on Novels and Ideas: “Adventures”. This four-class course meets alternate Tuesdays. They will discuss: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (10/6), The Lord of the Flies by William Golding (10/20), Under the Net by Iris Murdoch (11/3), and The Crying of Lot 49 by Thomas Pynchon (11/17).

Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 7 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Joseph Marchio presents the first of a two-class course called Celebrating Beethoven. In honor of Beethoven’s 250th birth year, Joe will discuss Beethoven’s life. The first class describes the difficulties Beethoven endured as well as the pivotal place he plays in the history of Western music. The second class, on 10/14, will focus on Beethoven’s 9th and final symphony, “The Ode to Joy.”

Thursday morning, Oct. 8 from 10:30 a.m.– noon Michael Berlin begins a three-class course called The News Media Crisis and the Election. During the three classes on Oct. 8, 15, and 22, he will discuss election media coverage challenges amid various global challenges and crisis.

Friday morning, Oct. 9 from 10:30 a.m.– noon, Kathie Gulotta presents The Mystery We Are. In this one-class course Kathie will present insights from Albert Einstein, poet Mary Oliver, and others. She will also referrence Dr. Eben Alexander’s “Living in a Conscious Universe”, Anil Seth’s Tedtalk, and introduce B.O.D. breathing.

Friday afternoon, Oct. 9 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., John Ward begins a four-class course called The Chemistry of Life and The World Around Us. In an easy to understand manner, John will lay out the basics of chemistry and the building blocks of life, and then discuss our foods, DNA, viruses, gene editing, opioids and plastics, and their importance in our everyday life.

You can register by mail, at the library, or online. Registration is ongoing. You must register at least 24 hours prior to any class. You may pick up brochures and registration forms at the following downtown Orleans locations: Snow Library (67 Main Street), Sea Howl Bookshop (46 Main Street), and Main Street Wine & Gourmet (42 Main Street). Your registration and donation can be mailed in or put in the Snow Library book drop slot.
