Titian, WW 2 and the making of jazz top next week's offerings in Lifetime Learning

The sixth week of the Lifetime Learning Fall session beginning on Nov. 1 will include the following nine courses:

On Monday, Nov. 1 from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Marc Strauss presents the third in his four-part course on "Classic Films Noir." In this class, Professor Strauss will introduce and show "The Big Sleep"(1946). A discussion of the film will follow the screening. This course is Zoom only and will not be recorded.

On Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Russ Leng, political science professor at Middlebury College, presents the first in a three-part course. "WW II: Reflections and Lessons." The first class explores "The Rise of Fascism in the 1920s and 30s: Could This Happen Here?" This course is Zoom only.

On Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., clinical psychologist Dr. Maureen Osborne presents the second of two classes on gender identity. This class will be a panel discussion among individuals with “Trans” experience such as individuals who have or are in the process of transitioning or parents of transgender children. This course is a hybrid.

On Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Steve and Jeff Bornemeier present the third in a four-part course on "Novels and Ideas: Heroes and Heroines." The novel that will be discussed is "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This course is a hybrid.

On Wednesday, Nov. 3 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., John Whalen presents "A Close Look at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame." This second class is on the "The Rise of the Groups." This course is a hybrid.

On Thursday, Nov. 4 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, musicians Bruce Abbott and Fred Fried present a one-class course that explores how musicians create jazz music. They will perform a program of jazz standards that illustrate the concepts they will be presenting. This course is a hybrid.

New to the curriculum, on Thursday, Nov. 4 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Peggy Kelleher, Lifetime Learning's mythology guru, will present a unique one-class course on "Titian: Women, Myth, and Power." The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston is currently hosting a special exhibition of six paintings by Titian, each of which is based on a myth included in Ovid’s "Metamorphoses." In this course Peggy will make these six paintings come alive from their mythological roots with expanded background stories on each tale. These masterpieces were created in the mid-1500s as a set and are together again for the first time in almost 500 years. This course is Zoom only.

On Friday, Nov. 5 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, English teacher and department head Joe Auciello presents the second of three classes on selected short stories of Ernest Hemingway. This course is a hybrid.

Later on Friday, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Joe Marchio presents the second of four classes on how the architecture of performances venues influences the musical experience and vice versa. This class will focus on Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. This course is a hybrid.

Register by mail, at the library, or online. Please register at least 24 hours before the class. You may pick up brochures and a registration form and register at Snow Library, 67 Main Street, Orleans. Your registration and donation can also be mailed in.
