From bionic limbs to “Brigadoon”: Lifetime Learning continues
Week three of the 2020 Fall Session of Lifetime Learning at Snow Library brings a variety of new courses as well as continuing ones.
On Monday, Oct. 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Susan Hockfield, author of "The Age of Living Machines: How Biology Will Build the Next Technology Revolution," discusses emerging technologies that hold the promise of overcoming some of the greatest humanitarian, medical and environmental challenges of our time.
Also on Monday, Oct. 19, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Marc Strauss presents the first course in a five-part series covering "Five Decades of Film Musicals: The 1930s-1970s.,” with a screening and discussion of "Gold Diggers of 1933." “The Barkleys of Broadway” follows on Oct. 26 and “Brigadoon” on Nov. 2.
On Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Peggy Kelleher presents the first of five classes exploring classical mythology through art, each week focusing on a different art collection in a different part of the world. The first course will examine myths and legends of the ancient world as expressed in paintings at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
On Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Paul Kelleher begins his three-class course called "Resilience in a Time of Crisis," discussing findings from research and experience that can enhance one’s ability to bounce back from stress and adversity.
And from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22, John Whelan presents the first in his five-class course, "Where Rock & Roll Has Gone" with a look at the lives and music of the Supremes, the Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
Week 3 of Lifetime Learning also features some continuing programs, such as the second installment of Steve and Jeff Bornemeir's "Novels and Ideas: Adventures" course from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20 (up for discussion: "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding). On Thursday, Oct. 22 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Michael Berlin conclude his three-class course on "The News Media Crisis and the Election." And on Friday, Oct. 23 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., John Ward presents the third in his four-class course on "The Chemistry of Life and The World Around Us."
Due to Covid-19 all the courses will be presented via Zoom. You may register by mail, at the library, or online. Registration is ongoing. You must register at least 48 hours prior to any class.
