Lifetime Learning classes begin Feb. 24
Registration for the Friends of Snow Library’s 2025 Winter-Spring Lifetime Learning Session is now open. The first week of the session begins with the following courses, all of which are available online via Zoom while five are also offered in person at the library. All are recorded and registered participants will receive a Zoom link to the class recording for future viewing. In addition to hearing loop technology in the Craine Room, all classes on Zoom provide on-screen closed captioning of the sound (also included on the recording).
Monday, Feb. 24: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. “Murder Will Out! The Evolution of the British Mystery Novel.” Mike McCartney of Eldredge Library examines the history of the British mystery novel in three classes when popular British mystery writers will be discussed including Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, and Dorothy Sayers.
Tuesday, Feb. 25: 10:30 to noon. “Causes and Consequences of the Great War” is presented by Richard Stewart in the first of two classes that consider the causes of World War I and how the war changed the world. The second class will meet on March 4.
Wednesday, Feb. 26: 10:30 to noon. “WICKED!!” Witches, Sorcerers, and Seers in the Greco-Roman World” takes a look at the evolution of witches from the often beautiful heroes of ancient world literature to the malicious hags of later literature. Peggy Kelleher, teacher of classical language, will be our guide. Classes continue on March 5 and 12. Zoom only.
Wednesday, Feb. 26: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. “Art of the Harlem Renaissance” is a new course offering from popular arts presenter Beth Stein. In this one class course, she discusses the unique group of artists from Harlem, New York who helped make African-American art known to the general population.
Thursday, Feb. 27: 10:30 to noon. “Fake Photos: From Ghosts to AI” is a one-class course presented by Gordon Talley who considers the ways that digital photography, Photoshop, the Internet, social media, and AI can con the eye.
Thursday, Feb. 27: 1:30 to 3 p.m. Joseph Marchio returns with a course on “American Sacred Music.” Joe presents how traditional worship music, gospel music, and spirituals evolved and the ways they influenced other genres of music including jazz, blues, country, and rock and roll. Classes continue on March 6, 13, and 20.
