Trailblazing American composers are subject of Lifetime Learning's newest offering

The tenth week of the 2021 Winter/Spring Session of Lifetime Learning at Snow Library, beginning next Tuesday, includes a new course on groundbreaking American composers John Ives and Aaron Copland, led by Joseph Marchio, as well as continuing classes in mythology, wellness and science. Unless otherwise indicated, most classes are recorded and can be viewed at your convenience.

On Tuesday, April 6 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Peggy Kelleher presents the second class in her popular three-part course "Murder and Mayhem in the Ancient World (And You Think Your Family Was Dysfunctional?)". Learn about the family chaos and carnage caused by curses, oracles, and prophecies as depicted in the works of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and others. This class explores Orestes and Electra - the crime bill comes due.

Later on Tuesday, from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Kathie Gulotta concludes her three-class course exploring the "Juxtaposition of Science, Poetry and Breathing: Simple Strategies to Lighten Your Emotional Load." Interesting insights will be revealed as she examines the ideas of various physicists and poets side by side. This will be combined with beneficial breathing techniques that will raise your energy.

On Wednesday, April 7 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Joseph Marchio, assistant conductor of the Cape Symphony, launches his four-class course on "American’s Musical Trailblazers: Charles Ives and Aaron Copland." Ives's musical compositions were highly experimental, and much of his art was not heard until after his death. As Ives's music became more widely known, his fame spread quickly. Europe, which was unimpressed with the American musical tradition, quickly took note of his profound music. Aaron Copland, who came on the scene following Ives, continued to build upon Ives's rich musical tradition and would ultimately give America its own musical voice by incorporating folk, jazz, and American sacred musical elements in his concert works.

And on Friday, April 9 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Stephen Munroe will present the second in a five-part course titled "The Molecular Revolution in Biology and Medicine." The second topic will focus on the molecular organization of cells.
