From jazz to Les Miz, a variety of classes to pick from this week in Lifetime Learning

The third week of the winter-spring session of Lifetime Learning at Snow Library features a new course on the history of jazz and brings back lecturers on Salman Rushdie, World War I, “super musicals” and more. Most classes are recorded and can be viewed at your convenience.

On Monday, Feb. 15 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., George Scharr launches his two-part course on the history of jazz. From Afro-American spirituals and the formative elements of jazz, through the Harlem Renaissance to George Gershwin and the concert hall, you’ll hear behind-the-scenes stories and see video clips of jazz greats.

On Tuesday, Feb. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Joseph Auciello presents part two of his five-class course on Salman Rushdie and “The Satanic Verses.” Also on Tuesday from 1:30 to 3 p.m., Russ Leng wraps up his course on “World War I: Its Causes and Consequences,” with a focus on the legacy of the war, such as national boundaries and relations between people and governments in the 21st century.

On Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 1:30 to 3 p.m., John Whelan continues his series on “Super Musicals of the 1970s and 1980s.” This class will look at “Les Miserables.”

John Ward and Paul Coteus present the third part of their course titled “Weather & Climate Change Forecasting Explained, with Specifics for Cape Cod” on Friday, Feb. 19 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Later on Friday, from 1:30 to 4 p.m., Mary Ann Eaton returns with part 3 of her Irish Film Festival, this time leading a screening and discussion of “The Seventh Stream,” which stars Scott Glenn, Saffron Burrows, John Lynch and Fiona Shaw (this course will not be recorded).
