From ‘Undressing Tyranny’ to troubadour tales & songs
/The following courses are offered during the fifth week of the Friends of Snow Library’s 2025 Winter-Spring Lifetime Learning Session. All are available via Zoom while five are also offered in person at the Snow Library. All courses are recorded and registered participants will receive a Zoom link to the class recording for future viewing, so even if you register after a course has begun, the entire course can be enjoyed.
Monday, March 24, 1:30 to 4 p.m.: “Undressing Tyranny: Four Hitchcock Films.” Popular presenter and retired dramatic arts professor Marc Strauss returns with a new film course highlighting Hitchcock’s warning about the false and seductive narratives of authoritarianism. He will introduce each film and lead a discussion after viewing. Secret Agent begins the series, followed by Foreign Correspondent on 3/31, Saboteur on 4/7, and Lifeboat on 4/14. Zoom only.
Tuesday, March 25, 10:30 a.m. to noon: “Climate Change: What Homeowners Should Know and What They Can Do” considers climate issues facing coastal communities and how residents can help to mitigate them. The presenter, environmentalist Shelly McComb, works in coastal and climate resilience planning with the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
Tuesday, March 25, 1:30 to 3:15p.m. “Art Herstory 101: Did Michelangelo Have a Sister?” is a four-class course presented by arts presenter Lois Karfunkel. She will examine the part that gender bias has played in art history from early civilizations to modern times. Classes continue on April 1, 8, and 15.
Wednesday. March 26, 10:30 a.m. to noon. “Fake Photos: From Ghosts to AI” is a one-class course which, due to technical difficulties with the original class in February, Gordon Talley is offering again with new and enhanced visuals. The class considers the ways that digital photography, Photoshop, the Internet, social media, and AI can con the eye. Those who attended the original class will enjoy another look with this enhanced course.
Wednesday, March 26, 1:30 to 3 p.m. “Women Painters of Mithila (North India) Express Their Critique of Contemporary Life through Artwork.” In this unique one-class course, Paula Richman tells the story of how a group of female painters in India transformed their lives through their artwork which today appears in more than 30 art museums across the globe.
Thursday, March 27, 10:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 3 p.m. “Troubadour Tales and Songs.” Country singer Matt York returns to Snow Library for another two classes in one day, performing songs from the American Country Songbook. Come and enjoy one or both performances.
In addition to hearing loop technology in the Craine Room, all classes on Zoom provide on-screen closed captioning (also included on the recording).
Registration for the 2025 Winter-Spring Session of Lifetime Learning is ongoing. To receive a Zoom link in time, please register at least 24 hours before the class. If you are coming in person to the Craine Room at the library and have not pre-registered, you may also register at the door. The suggested donation is $10 per course.
