Lifetime Learning homes in on local topics, from food insecurity to coy-wolves

The  Friends of Snow Library 2023 Winter-Spring Lifetime Learning session continues with courses to expand your mind. All but one are available online as well as in person at the Craine Room in the library. All are recorded.

Monday, March 20, 1:30 to 4 pm: “Irish Film Festival” with Mary Ann Eaton concludes with the movie “Song of Granite.”

Tuesday, March 21, 10:30 to noon. “Hiding in Plain Sight: The Cape’s Food Insecurity Problem.” This one class presents a panel of experts who will offer solutions to the problem of food insecurity that some workers on the Cape face and how you might help your fellow neighbors in need.

Wednesday, March 22, 10:30 to noon. Joseph Auciello continues his class on “American Poetry: A Place for the Genuine.” Using the text 101 Great American Poems supplemented by contemporary verse from The Poetry Foundation, the course offers participants an opportunity to enjoy and discuss American poetry. It concludes on March 29.  

Wednesday, March 22, 1:30 to 3 p.m. In this one-class course, “The Eastern Coy-Wolf,” Peter Trull, education director for the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, returns to Lifetime Learning to offer an objective view of Eastern coyotes. He considers the coyotes' place in our world and ours in theirs.

Wednesday. March 22, 5 to 6:30 p.m. “Novels and Ideas: ‘Awakenings’ II” continues with a discussion of The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros. Other books to read, think, and discuss are The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri (April 5) and Small Things Like These by Clare Keegan (April 19).

Thursday, March 23, 10:30 a.m. to noon. For those looking to understand China’s place in the world today, Stew Goodwin of the Academy of Lifelong Learning examines Chinese nationalism and China’s military in this second class of the course “China and the New World Order.” Zoom only.

Thursday, March 23, 1:30 to 3 p.m. In one class, “The Mayflower Story: Dispelling the Myths, Confronting the Reality,” Ron Petersen of the Orleans Historical Commission sorts out myth from reality as he presents a balanced view of the Mayflower story. As the Craine Room is full, only Zoom registration is available. (Please contact Lifetime Learning if you are unable to Zoom and wish to attend.)
