Studies in art, music & ancient lit

The Friends of Snow Library's 2022 winter-spring Lifetime Learning session continues the week of March 14 to 17 with a selection of new courses on art, music, literature and more.

On Monday Mary Ann Eaton, professor of studies in Irish and Celtic literature at University College, Cork, Ireland, continues her Irish film series with a screening of "Falling for a Dancer, Parts 1 & 2." Discussion follows the film. This program, from 1:30 to 4 pm, will not be recorded.

Tuesday from 10:30 am to noon, visual artist Richard Perry presents "Seeing is Believing: The Art of Looking at Art," exploring how each of us looks at art differently and how art has taught us new ways to see. Later on Tuesday, from 1:30 to 3 pm, troubadour David Roth presents "Music that Washed Ashore," describing and performing an eclectic range of original music that was inspired by his experiences after moving to Cape Cod in 2000. Zoom-only.

Joseph Auciello, a popular and engaging teacher and journalist, returns on Wednesday, March 16 from 10:30 am to noon with the last of his three classes on Hemingway’s masterpiece, "The Sun Also Rises."

Wednesday also brings inspirational teacher Katherine Dowd Gulotta, who presents the first of three classes on the "Souls of Black Folk: Changing the Narrative." It takes place from 1:30 to 3 pm: Current issues to be discussed include the debate over Critical Race Theory, the origins of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the work of Stacey Abrams. Works by Derrick Bell, Sherrilyn A. Ifall, bell hooks, and others will be highlighted.

On Thursday, March 17 from 1:30 to 3 pm, writer and retired professor Kent H. Dixon and his son, artist and cartoonist Kevin H. Dixon, present the first of two classes on "The Epic of Gilgamesh: Cuneiform Tablets Meet Graphic Novel." The course delves into the history of this oldest work of great literature, inscribed on clay tablets more than 1,000 years before Homer, and explores how father and son worked together to retell this epic story in a graphic novel. Zoom-only.

Unless indicated otherwise, courses will be presented as a hybrid, meaning that the presenter will be in the classroom with up to 40 registered attendees while the class is simultaneously Zoomed. Most classes will be recorded. Brochures and registration forms are available at Snow Library, 67 Main Street, Orleans or online at friendsofsnowlibrary.org/lifetime-learning-program. Register by mail, online, or at the library. There is a suggested donation of $10 per course. Please register at least 24 hours before the class.
