Lifetime Learning: Eco-Friendly Landscaping

  • Snow Library 67 Main Street Orleans, MA United States (map)

This three-part course will feature various expert presenters addressing the importance of eco-friendly landscaping. The first class will be taught by Peter Jensen, a regenerative agroecologist and founder of Terra Firma Permagardens, who will focus on eco-friendly lawn care. A healthy, well-nourished, vibrant lawn is one of our best allies in our fight to keep nutrient pollution out of our waterways. Soil erosion and pesticide residue, caused by runoff from roads, hills and roofs can be prevented. The answer lies in the leaves, how people feed their lawns and their soil, and how they mow or if they choose not to mow. A green, easy-care lawn is possible without using synthetic fertilizers, irrigation or pesticides. This is the class to learn how.

Peter maintains his lush lawn and terraced “meadowscaped” hillside overlooking Pilgrim Lake in partnership with his wife, Lynn Van Norman. Together they have over 10 decades of hands-on experience across the world teaching organic agriculture, horticulture, and food security to those most directly impacted by climate change. In teaching this class, Peter will draw from his university training, experience as an extension agent and hands-on experience in soil science, forest and wildlife ecology and watershed management. Those who attend will be invited to a free guided tour of their property, at a later date to be determined, to see these principles in action.
