Lifetime Learning: The Tin Ticket - The Heroic Journey of Australia's Convict Women

  • Snow Library 67 Main Street Orleans, MA United States (map)

Harwich author Deborah Swiss will give a lecture based on her award-winning book, The Tin Ticket: The Heroic Journey of Australia’s Convict Women. When Deborah learned the history behind some of Australia’s founding mothers, she knew she had to write their story. As Women’s History Month is about to begin, come hear this inspirational true story of survival and the triumph of the human spirit as told through the lives of three ordinary women who were labor trafficked in the 19th century. Swiss recounts how poor British women were arrested, jailed, and then put on slave ships bound for Australia in what can be regarded as a form of human trafficking.

After researching her book, in 2016 Swiss joined Cape Cod PATH (People Against Trafficking Humans), a non-profit whose mission is to eliminate human trafficking on Cape Cod. She will also discuss this problem and how people can help. This class promises to be a fascinating presentation about an award-winning book now optioned for a television series and how it interfaces with similar challenges facing some of the women and teen girls living among us. The book will be available for purchase after the class.
