Marc Strauss presents the final class of his four-part, Zoom-only course that explores the ways in which Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense, soundly warned the world about the false and seductive narratives of authoritarianism in four war movies: Secret Agent (1936), Foreign Correspondent (1940), Saboteur (1942), and Lifeboat (1944). This class will focus on the 1944 movie, Lifeboat. Through introductory historical context, the showing of each film, and guided discussion afterward, Marc will identify and elaborate on the storyline, character development, and relationships in the film in an effort to expose the bewitching appeal and empty promise of autocracy and despotism.
Marc Strauss, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus at Dobbins Conservatory of Theatre and Dance at the Holland College of Arts & Media at Southeast Missouri State University. He has previously taught various courses on film and theater in past Lifetime Learning sessions and is eager to continue teaching others in an engaging and informative manner.
