Lifetime Learning looks at ‘Our Torn Supreme Court’ in November
/Politics and government take center stage as Lifetime Learning brings back Barbara Comstock, political commentator on ABC, CNN and PBS, and Richard Finnegan, poli sci professor at Stonehill College, to lead classes on Congress and the Supreme Court in November.
Comstock, also president-elect of the bipartisan U.S. Association of Former Members of Congress, will talk about respect for the rule of law and the legislative process in her Zoom-only lecture titled "On the Brink of the Midterms" from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1. Finnegan will explore how two ideas of judicial interpretation - originalism and liberal interpretation - are creating "Our Torn Supreme Court" from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 3. Finnegan's course continues on Nov. 10 and Nov. 17.
Other new offerings include John Whelan's series on Cole Porter and Meredith Wilson, which begins on Wednesday, Nov. 2 with a discussion of the musicals "Kiss Me Kate" "Anything Goes" and "High Society" rom 1:30 to 3 p.m. And Maureen Osborne, a clinical psychologist, talks about "Transgender Identity: Contemporary Controversies and Family Relationships" on Thursday Nov. 3 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Continuing courses include Leigh and David Fisher's Reel Time film series, "A Political Potpourri," which resumes on Monday, Oct. 31 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. with a screening of "The Front" (1976) about the Hollywood blacklisting of the 1950s. It stars Woody Allen and Zero Mostel. Kerry Brown wraps up his examination of Shakespeare's "As You Like It" on Wednesday, Nov. 2 from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
A final panel discussion on "The Cape's Housing Crisis...What's Your Stake In It?" explores solutions to the housing problem on Cape Cod from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Friday, Nov. 4.
Unless otherwise noted, courses include both an in-person and online option, accommodating up to 60 registered participants in the Craine Room while the class is simultaneously Zoomed and recorded. Zoom registration is unlimited.
