Lifetime Learning: Romania - History of a Nation at the Crossroads of Europe

  • Snow Library 67 Main Street Orleans, MA United States (map)

This class, taught by Larry Goodrich, serves to explore the rich history of Romania and its people. Larry, who is a former diplomat, journalist and business owner, will discuss how this unique outpost of the Roman Empire dealt with conquest and absorbed the cultural influences of South Slavs, Hungarians, Turks, Austrians and Russians, yet managed to regain its independence and preserve its linguistic ties to the West. The talk will explore Romania’s geopolitical maneuvering as it bounced from World War I ally of France and Britain, to being a partner of Nazi Germany under a military dictator, then becoming an ally of the West again after a 1944 coup, then becoming a Soviet Communist puppet state, and finally ending up as a present member of NATO.
