Kerry Brown, Ph.D., will teach this four-part course on Shakespeare’s Henry IV Part I. Kerry has previously taught Shakespeare’s works to high school students for nearly fifty years, and now continues to teach the Bard’s works to adults on Cape Cod. In Henry IV, Part I, Shakespeare explores royal legitimacy and the limits hedging the power of a king. In doing so, he also creates one of the greatest comic – and human — characters in all of literature: Sir John Falstaff. In this four-week course, Kerry will examine issues of English history and Shakespeare’s idea of history. The class will read Henry IV Part I, look at scenes from Henry IV Part II, and use two (or more) film versions to provide contrasting views of the play.
